Is there a role for breathing re-education?
After attending a lifestyle medicine conference over the weekend, at BradCliff we ask what part do we play in this growth area of medicine?
What is lifestyle medicine?
Who can practice lifestyle medicine?
Lifestyle medicine is an evidence-based approach that uses lifestyle changes, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, social connection, and avoiding risky substances, as the primary treatment and prevention for chronic diseases.
Instead of relying mainly on drugs or surgery, it aims to prevent, manage, and sometimes reverse conditions like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.

Breathing re-education plays a key role in lifestyle medicine
By addressing dysfunctional breathing patterns (over-breathing, mouth breathing, chest dominance) that contribute to stress, anxiety, and fatigue.
Recent research : breathing re-education,nasal, diaphragmatic, and slow/coherent breathing, reduces stress and anxiety, and enhances overall health outcomes (Hamasaki 2020; Harbour 2022; Courtney 2022; Siebieszuk 2025)
Who can practice lifestyle medicine?
Lifestyle medicine is a clinical discipline, so it is formally practised by qualified health professionals (e.g., doctors, nurses, dietitians, psychologists, physiotherapists) who apply evidence-based lifestyle interventions (nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, substance avoidance, social connection) in patient care.
