Samantha Holtzhausen
MSc. (Cardiorespiratory Rehabilitation)
South African CPRG Board Member
South African Thoracic Society Associate Member
Sam is one of our South African instructors and a director at NHH Physiotherapists Inc., a private practice based in Cape Town. She obtained her master’s degree in Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy (Title: An investigation into the use of ultrasound as a surrogate measure of diaphragm function) in 2013 and has a special interest in critical care, chronic respiratory conditions, breathing pattern disorders and athletic performance.
In 2015, she opened an out-patient pulmonary rehabilitation division of the practice and has been running it successfully since. Chronic lung conditions (i.e. COPD, IPF, Cystic Fibrosis etc.), pre-post thoracic surgery and double lung transplant candidates/recipients initially formed the patient bulk seen at the pulmonary rehabilitation clinic. Since completing her Bradcliff Level 1 course in 2020, Sam gained the skills necessary to help patients with breathing pattern disorders and to contribute to the optimization of respiratory performance in athletes.
Since the start of the pandemic, Sam has been extensively involved in the Covid-19 critical care and post-acute units, as well as the rehabilitation of patients suffering the long-term consequences of Covid-19. She is currently conducting a research study, together with Stellenbosch University, assessing the clinical course and 6-month outcome of Covid-19 patients admitted to hospital.
Sam is dedicated to raising awareness around all things breathing and established a Run for Lungs campaign in 2018 to use as a platform, donating all funds raised from the events to further research in the field of chronic respiratory conditions. She is passionate about creating innovative pathways to ensure that patient care remains at the forefront of what we do. Sam is also a keen ultra-trail runner, rock climber and all-round adventure seeker. She loves the mountains and believes her inspiration and zest for new ideas comes from long days out on the trails, fully immersed in the great outdoors.
